It is very important to look after your wood floors
Proper use of vacuuming, sweeping, and damp mopping is usually all that is required to maintain the cleanliness and appearance of a wood floor.
Like tile floors, excessive grit and foot traffic will affect appearance. Unlike carpet or rugs, a properly finished wood floor, like tile, does not accumulate hidden soil or odorous compounds.
Firstly, wood and water don't mix. No matter what finish your wood floor has, never pour water on your floor. While a slightly dampened mop may be used on polyurethane and other surface finishes in good condition, even small amounts of water can cause the deterioration of finishes and warp the underlying wood.
Also, when using any maintenance product, please read the label. Always follow label directions for maintenance products, except for directions, which call for using water on wood. Always use only products specifically designed for wood floors. Contact your local wood flooring distributor for products and specific cleaning recommendations.
Sanded floor finishes and seals
- After the wooden floor has been sanded and polished, it is protected with a wood floor seal
- Some people might call this wood floor varnish, but in professional terms, varnish is only one type of wood floor seal
- Quality seals protect the finished wood, offering a stain resistant durable finish that should, with the correct maintenance, last years
- Buy wooden floor seals and oils in the shop
How long will my seal last?
As long as you take good care of it and under normal domestic traffic conditions typical re-coating times are as follows:
- A part acrylic seal should last 3+ years
- A high traffic seal should last 5+ years
- An oil will need touching up once every year, if not sooner
